New Supreme Court nominee is ‘consistently conservative’October 31st 2005, 13:55 Jeff Sela ![]() George Bush has announced his new nomination for the Supreme Court after Harriet Miers stepped down. The new nominee, Samuel Alito, has actually got some experience as a judge, unlike Miers. Harriet Miers appears to have stepped down because she didn't have the support of the Republicans, let alone the Democrats. No one expected Bush to choose someone liberal for the post, but with Alito he at least has his own party's backing. Apparently Alito “is known for consistently conservative judgements”, and in particular he doesn't like abortion. The BBC article points out how important this position will be, and why the opinions of whoever becomes judge could make a big difference:
And pornography. The current wrangling over the 2257 regulations is likely to end up in the Supreme Court eventually, and some of the fallout from the new ‘war on porn’ could get there too, if the DoJ keep pushing. If Alito gets approved by the Senate, it can only be bad news for the porn industry. And since these are lifetime appointments, Bush may leave a Republican stain on the Supreme Court long after he is out of the whitehouse, even if the next president is a Democrat. < Vagina kept secret from teenage girls | Oestrogen makes women prettier > |
