HIV prevention with genetically modified bacteria

Some American boffins are working on a new way of preventing HIV infections, by introducing genetically modified bacteria into the body. These bacteria would be of the same kind that normally live in the guts and vagina, which are a perfectly healthy part of the body's ecosystem, except that they'd be modified to release a protein that can help fight off the virus.

So far some of these bacteria have been trialed on mice, with promising results. It'll be a long time before they've been developed and tested well enough to be used on humans on a large scale, but they could be a cheap way of tackling HIV in countries that have a major problem with it.
