Human immunodeficiency virus, and incurable sexually transmitted disease, which can damage the immune system leading to various diseases and eventually death. There are now treatments available which can suppress the virus enough that some people with the virus can survive indefintely, but the drugs are too expensive for many people, especially in some African countries where HIV is very common.
