HPV (Human Papilloma Virus)

A virus which can be transmitted through sex. Sometimes causes genital warts, but often has no symptoms. In its various forms it is the most common disease that can be spread through sex.

HPV is a major cause of cervical cancer. Several vaccines have been developed, and are likely to come in to common use over the next few years, to try to reduce death from cervical cancer. Even with the vaccines though, it is generally considered a good idea for young women who are sexually active to have regular ‘pap smear’ tests to check for signs of cancer.

Vaccine for HPV imminent

A new vaccine against HPV has been successfully tested, and may be used in the UK in the next year or two.
